How to Fix % Disk Usage in Windows 10 & Earlier | AVG.Windows 10 % disk usage even after factory reset - Microsoft Community

Your computer may be infected with malware that is causing your disk usage to spike. If you have antivirus software running in the background it should have caught the issue.

Nothing is perfect though, so force your antivirus package to scan your hard drive for a potential infection. This could be a time-consuming process since your disk is already experiencing high usage but might be necessary to identify and remove malicious software.

A known bug in Windows 8 and 10 can cause a search loop that can be the cause of your high disk usage. To temporarily stop the Windows Search facility and see if it improves your disk issue, open an admin prompt and enter the command : net. This will stop Windows search from running until the next time Windows is restarted.

You can disable this service temporarily in a similar fashion to Windows search with the command: net. Use this procedure:. See if this improves your disk usage. If so, you may want to consider changing antivirus packages. Get it for iOS , Mac , Android. High disk usage can also be caused by your antivirus software — during a background scan, or if the tool suffers a malfunction and gets stuck.

If so, do not stop it. If the scan seems frozen, reboot your system and let it sit for a while until the antivirus stops. For instance, Adobe Reader runs various background tasks, and these might lead to high disk usage.

Once you launch Adobe Reader, Sleep Mode turns everything back on again as if nothing happened. Try Sleep Mode out for yourself. Fire up Disk Doctor and run a check. If it finds an error, it will fix it automatically. To prevent data loss, get your files off that disk as quickly as possible.

Copy them to an external hard disk and replace the drive with a new one. Your PC will use the page file on your disk as expanded memory. Over time, this page file can become defective, which can, in turn, cause unexpected slowdowns and high disk usage. To fix it, you need to delete that page file and create a new one.

To do that, press the Windows and R keys at the same time and type in sysdm. Uncheck Automatically manage paging file size for all drives and then select No paging file. Hit Set and then reboot your system. Repeat all those steps again, select System managed size , and hit Set.

Then, check Automatically manage paging file size for all drives. The index in Windows Search helps you find files, folders, emails, and even the content of some of those files instantly. To do that, it scans your hard disk and turns it into a super-fast index to give you immediate results. Click on the Start button and type in Indexing. The search results will return this:.

Click on Indexing Options. From there, select Advanced and hit the Rebuild button. That will completely erase the index, rebuild it, and hopefully fix any errors that cause hard disk thrashing. Temporary-file bugs are a rare occurrence, but I have witnessed them recently. After not being able to resolve the issue I ''Reset'' my PC. This cleared my hard drive and everything on it and created a fresh install of Windows.

The performance is a little better as expected with a fresh start. I haven't noticed any difference in performance even before resetting my PC but what i see in task manager is that the following applications are using the disk usage Antimalware Service Executable Service host: Sysmain Internet Browser: Firefox Windows App: Groove Music. The next service that we are going to disable is the SysMain service. This one can cause issues shortly after a reboot but it is known to do this all the time as well. SysMain analyses your usage habits and patterns.

In return, it tries to optimize the launching of applications on your Windows 10 computer. Same as before, change the startup type from Automatic to Disabled. Click on stop and end by clicking on Apply and Ok.

The last service that we want to disable is Windows Search. Right-click on it and select properties. Stop the service and set the startup type to disabled.

If not, continue on with the next method. One of the things that has a surprisingly good chance to succeed is performing a Windows update. So, we are going to try this next. Click on the Windows search bar and type in Windows Update Settings. This should open the Windows update menu. Click on download and install to continue.

There is a big chance that Windows 10 finds an update to download and install. When this is done, reboot your PC. In the next method, we are going to change the power settings to a high-performance plan. Click on it. Scroll down and select Additional power settings. Once you open it, you should see your current power plan.

We want to change this to a high-performance power plan. If so, select it and check if this made a difference.
